The Election of Scott Brown
January 23, 2010
Republicans should not get too excited about what happened in Massachusetts. The wave that swept Scott Brown into office may very well sweep the entire political class from whence they now perch.
Our fury is not aimed only at Democrats. We are mad at politicians.
Everyone from our City Council to our State Legislature and Governor to our Senate and Congress and President.
Did I say “our”? I misspoke. They no longer answer to us. We answer to them.
The arrogance and condescending attitude of the political class has reached critical mass, and it cannot be tolerated any longer without the American people losing their hard fought freedoms and their way of life.
We do not want politicians telling us what to do and what to think and what we should spend our money on and how we are irrelevant to America’s future.
Ordinary people should challenge all sitting politicians, Republican or Democrat, in the upcoming elections. We need new candidates with new vision for our nation. The economic mess that has been created by years of complacency on our part is almost incomprehensible. Why should we trust our future to the corrupt political class that allowed it?
People want a new political agreement with their representatives, and it is simple: dismantle the system. No more seniority. Term limits similar to those levied on the presidency. No more attempts to manage complexity that representatives are not qualified to manage.
A federal government no larger than it has to be. State, county and local governments that are accountable to the voters. No more legislating from the Bench. No more jackpot justice. Laws that prevent corporate executives from looting the companies they purport to lead.
“Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.” An axiom that is being proven true right before our eyes.
With the government takeover of the mortgage market, responsible taxpayers have been given the burden of paying off the inevitable losses. The FHA is still letting people who cannot afford them buy houses with a 3.5% down payment. If housing prices fall more than 3.5% as expected, every one of those new mortgages goes underwater. And you and I will be responsible for the mess. What is the problem with our government?
The government told us that only 85,000 jobs were lost in December. When you survey households, a more accurate perspective, we discover that job losses were actually 589,000. The reason the unemployment rate did not increase is because 661,000 people have quit looking for jobs. Only the government could invent such a deceptive accounting system.
The country has to create 125,000 jobs a month to account for new workers entering the job force. Meanwhile, 5.4 million jobs were lost last year. Only 65% of Americans are working, the fewest in decades. And what is the priority of this administration? Strangling the energy sector. Massacring healthcare. Enriching unions. Increasing taxes. And ignoring the needs of small businesses.
The pill Americans will have to swallow to fix the economy will be bitter. Benefits must be flat-lined if we are to avoid raising taxes to levels that are unsustainable and in turn collapse the whole system. As Baby Boomers work longer to recover the loss of their savings, it exacerbates the unemployment problem. Small businesses are asking employees to work longer hours; moving part-time workers to full time; and using temporary employment to meet their needs. Without seriously addressing the issues causing small businesses to tighten their belts we are facing a long, drawn out recovery.
Imagine proposing a healthcare bill where abusive use and tort reform are not addressed. Tort reform alone has the potential to reduce healthcare costs by 20%. Instead, the bills are designed to penalize the “bad guys” and to empower those who will “vote” the Democrats back in office for perpetuity.
Imagine spending $2.75 trillion dollars and not having a significant impact on the health of the economy because you are too busy consolidating power at the expense of the average American and handing money out to your cronies. The government could have paid off the debts of every American (aside from mortgages) and still had money left over. Instead, the money has been spent, American taxpayers have been handed the bill, and American consumers still hold $2.5 trillion of debt.
Imagine declaring the air that we exhale with each breath a hazardous substance and then attempting to regulate it at the expense of our nation’s energy needs. We have a century of natural gas right here in America. Two centuries of coal. Both can be converted to liquid form and used to power our economy. Instead, we are trying to generate power through means that make sense only in Fantasyland.
We are tired of Rahm Emanuel. Closed door deals. We do not like Chicago politics. Maybe in Chicago what happens behind closed doors stays there because the corruption is so deep. But it is not the case on the national scene.
We are not stupid. Up is not down just because a politician says so. Bribes are bribes regardless of what they are called. It is our money that is getting thrown around.
The first to go must be Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid.
I buy no California wines. Do not go to movies. Do not buy anything from California. No conferences or vacations to what is now a misnomer — the Golden State — until Pelosi is swept from office.
Same for Nevada. To hell with Las Vegas until Nevadans throw out the Senate’s biggest thug.
It is time for change. We do not need hope. We need results.
Get out and work to elect people with integrity who you believe will make a difference. Who know the way ahead is not the current path. Find people like Scott Brown.
It is our duty and obligation to our children and grandchildren.
